Compassionate therapy for Eating Disorders, Anxiety, and Addiction

Amy Consovoy, LPC, LCADC

“You can’t defeat the darkness by keeping it caged inside of you.”

– Seth Adam Smith

Something works until it doesn’t work anymore.

I help people struggling with chemical addictions and eating disorders to end the vicious cycle of self-criticism, anger, perfectionism, guilt, and shame.

My clients are plagued by many of the same things you are. Despite being driven, hard-working, and considerate people, nothing they do or say ever seems to be good enough.

When clients come in for therapy, they are tired of feeling like they have failed themselves and everyone around them. They have learned that acceptance is conditional, that they should be perfect in the eyes of themselves and others. They feel the need to be the perfect parent, wife, husband, or partner…the perfect son, daughter, or worker. When they look at their reflections they see flaws. They want to see someone who is happier, thinner, more attractive, more successful, more committed…they should just be more.

They do their best to manage the stress of it all. Some numb or drown their angry feelings with alcohol and drugs. Distancing themselves from their feelings and the ones they love because it is so much easier to disconnect. Some punish themselves by restricting or eliminating the food they have eaten. What starts out as a way to harmlessly “take the edge off", to push the pain down, or to control hunger, becomes a pattern towards an ideal that has never been quite attainable. It's a vicious cycle.

What my clients often discover in therapy is that disordered eating and substance abuse manifests as a way to cope with whatever they are experiencing. This is often fear about failure, anger, feelings of inadequacy, being overwhelmed, and being out of control. The reality is that many of my clients go above and beyond in their quest for perfection and their built-in drive to succeed. They aren't able to see how hard-working, brave, and resilient they actually are because they are so overcome with fears of falling short.

It becomes so exhausting to mange suffering all alone. Both substance use disorders (SUDs) and eating disorders flourish in secrecy, lies, shame, and social disconnection. These conditions do not want to be seen or overcome. They must be brought to light to lose their power. This becomes possible once you can find the courage to learn and practice the skills necessary to disarm and combat these patterns once and for all.

You too are brave. Making the decision to enter therapy and let your struggle be seen takes real tenacity. Part of you wants to recover. Otherwise you wouldn’t be here reading this right now. Seeking help is hard, vulnerable, and downright terrifying. Especially when you’ve been going at it alone and trying with all your might to hold everything together for so long.

Like my clients, you deserve to feel brave, empowered, and to feel in control of your life. You have the potential to be braver that you know. You deserve a life free of self-deprivation, feelings of powerlessness, and paralyzing anxiety. I want to help you get there.
